WHAT ARE PALM CONDUITS? |
 |
A Palm Conduit is software plug-in that is responsible for synchronizing data
from a Palm device to a host computer. Data synchronization is the exchange and
transformation of data between two applications that maintain separate data
stores. Applications share the data and the synchronization process keeps each
application's copy of the data current and accurate. In addition to data
synchroniztion, conduits are responsible for the installation of new Palm
applications as well as backing up existing Palm databases.
Corporate workers today need to make decisions quicker and access more
information than ever before. Companies need to provide secure mobile and
remote access to their core systems including Customer Relationship Management,
Billing Systems, Time and Expense, and specialized industry applications. Data
Synchronization helps to empower mobile workers with access to these enterprise
applications via a PDA. Applications can be run locally on mobile devices when
network connections are unavailable. The mobile application data can then be
synchronized back and forth with the corporate database.

USAGE SCENARIO: TIME & EXPENSE |
 |
In the fast paced business world, it is easy to lose track of billable time and
their expenses when a consultant is having multiple phone calls, meetings with
different clients, and the constant dining out while on a long a business trip.
If the consultant is equipped with a Palm device and a Time and Expense
application, they can simply enter the information real time. This allows all
the billable phone calls, dinners, and meetings to be tracked accurately. When
the consultant gets back to their computer they can put the device in the
cradle and synchronize their time and expense information with the corporate
database.
When the consultant finally returns to the office the expense reimbursment check
is waiting for them instead of their usual expense forms to fill out.
